What to Do If You’re Arrested
- 1Do not talk or agree to give a statement to police. The only information you should provide is your name, address, phone number, a contact person, and other basics for the booking paperwork.
- 2Clearly state to a police officer immediately that you want a lawyer. We cannot stress enough how important it is to ask for an attorney right off the bat.
- 3Be respectful of the police officers. Even if they are rude to you or rough, stay polite and quiet. Do not resist.
- 4Try to remember all the details of your arrest, including any witnesses who were there, what the officers said, and the general timeline of how it all happened.
- 5Do not believe officers if they rattle off “evidence” they have against you. They are trying to get you to talk. Do not fall for it.
- 6If possible, get the names and badge numbers of the officers who arrested you.
If you’ve been arrested, even if you decide you want to plead guilty, you should never try to represent yourself in court. Prosecutors will not go easy on you, and there may be unexpected consequences that you don’t learn about until it’s too late. Contact our knowledgeable Las Vegas criminal defense lawyers now.
